This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, May 30 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

A Pileated Woodpecker was reported from the Beech Forest in Provincetown on Friday. A Mississippi Kite was seen over the dunes, and a Pine Siskin was seen elsewhere in town.

The mid-20th-century cartoon character Woody Woodpecker was inspired by an Acorn Woodpecker that “staged a cameo” during animator Walter Lantz’s honeymoon, calling and drumming at the cabin where he and his wife Gracie were staying, according to the American Bird Conservancy. But “Woody’s shaggy red topknot much more closely resembles that of a Pileated Woodpecker,” write the experts at the conservancy. Plus, the cartoon character’s laugh, originally voiced by Mel Blanc, “sounds more like a Pileated Woodpecker’s call as well.” (Photo by Jim Hudgins/USFWS)

Birds at Race Point in Provincetown included a Common Murre, a Caspian Tern, 2 Black-Legged Kittiwakes, a Lesser Black-Backed Gull, 2 Iceland Gulls, 11 Piping Plovers, and 2 Manx Shearwaters.

Two Mississippi Kites and a Least Bittern were seen from North Truro.
