This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Feb. 21 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown this week included a Pacific Loon, 16 Common Murres, 2 Thick-Billed Murres, 900 Razorbills, a Black Guillemot, 25 Iceland Gulls, a Glaucous Gull, and 2 Common Ravens. Elsewhere in Provincetown, someone dropped a dime on an Evening Grosbeak.

Northern Saw-Whet Owls eat mostly small mammals, hunting them at night. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, their favorites are deer mice and white-footed mice, but they also like shrews, house mice, harvest mice, pocket mice, jumping mice, montane voles, red-backed voles, meadow voles, heather voles, red tree voles, shrew-moles, bats, and juveniles of larger mammals like pocket gophers, chipmunks, and squirrels. During migration they supplement their diets with titmice, chickadees, kinglets, juncos, waxwings, sparrows, thrushes, wrens, warblers, robins, and even other small owl species. Sightings at High Head in North Truro included a Eurasian Green-Winged Teal, 50 Greater Scaups, 5 American Woodcocks, a Northern Saw-Whet Owl, 2 Gray Catbirds, a Fox Sparrow, an Eastern Towhee, and 2 White-Crowned Sparrows.

There were 20 Red Crossbills in Wellfleet.
