This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Jan. 10 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks are common, but not at this time of year. They are supposed to be harbingers of spring, arriving right after the Robins. The Cornell Bird Lab says they are often trapped for sale as cage birds in their wintering range, “because they look and sound pretty, and this has had an unknown impact on their population.” (Photo by Karl Bardon/Macaulay Library)

Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included a Pacific Loon, a late Great Shearwater, 9 Common Murres, and 240 Razorbills.

An out-of-season Rose-Breasted Grosbeak has been visiting a feeder in Wellfleet.

A single American Bittern was seen in Eastham (and there was one in Orleans, too). There was also one Short-Eared Owl in Eastham.
