Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Jan. 3 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included 2 Pacific Loons and a late Great Shearwater, plus 3 Dovekies, a Thick-Billed Murre, 15 Common Murres, 235 Razorbills, and 18 Iceland Gulls.
The Truro Christmas Bird Count was held on Dec. 30, with highlights including 53 Red Crossbills, 28 Pine Siskins, 15 Northern Saw-whet Owls, a Northern Shrike in Wellfleet, 4 Clapper Rails on the Herring River, and a Glaucous Gull in Provincetown.
An out-of-season Rose-Breasted Grosbeak has been visiting a feeder in Wellfleet on and off for a week.
Reports came in of single Rusty Blackbirds in Truro and two Short-Eared Owls at Nauset Beach — we don’t know on which side of the border.
