There’s a path off North Pamet Road in Truro that slowly climbs around a bearberry-covered dune up to a soaring overlook of the Atlantic at the top, but there’s another view worth catching six inches off the ground and trailside. The ground-hugging bearberries of Bearberry Hill are now in bloom, offering a riot of pinks and whites for pollinators and sightseers alike. The dune is almost entirely covered by the native shrub and is proof of just what a tough, beautiful groundcover bearberry can be. Even in poor soil with sharp drainage, the evergreen Arctostaphylos uva-ursi looks gorgeous in every season: glossy and green in the summer, full of bright red berries in the fall, and a festive reddish hue in the coldest months.
