This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, March 26 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

A Townsend’s Solitaire continued at High Head in North Truro.

The National Park Service’s online “Spotlight Series” offers a trove of facts about black vultures. Their featherless heads are an adaptation that keeps them from getting contaminated while eating carrion. Unlike turkey vultures, they don’t have a good sense of smell, but they can see a carcass as far away as four miles. “Their gut contains special acids that can dissolve anthrax, botulism, salmonella, and cholera bacteria,” according to the NPS blog. They “won’t typically dine on highly rotted animals,” it reports. “Even vultures have standards.” (Photo by Doug Greenberg/NPS)

Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included an early Manx Shearwater, 2 Pacific Loons, 2 Thick-Billed Murres, 2 Black Guillemots, 90 Razorbills, 4 Common Murres, 8 Iceland Gulls, a Glaucous Gull, and 325 Red-Throated Loons. There was also a Black Vulture in Provincetown this week.

Someone saw an American Bittern in North Truro.
