Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Dec. 20 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Cape Cod Christmas Bird Count was held on Sunday, with highlights from the Outer Cape and beyond including a Grasshopper Sparrow in Eastham, 2 Blue-Winged Teal in West Harwich, several Red Crossbills and 9 Orange-Crowned Warblers in Orleans, and several Yellow-Breasted Chats and a Painted Bunting in Chatham.
The Slaty-Backed Gull in Provincetown Harbor was last reported on Dec. 13.
Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included a late Great Shearwater and a Laughing Gull, plus 400 Long-Tailed Ducks, 1,200 Red-Breasted Mergansers, 2 Dovekies, 9 Common Murres, 350 Razorbills, a Thick-Billed Murre, and 6 Iceland Gulls.
That Short-Eared Owl was seen in Eastham again.
