Conversation Starters
Citizens’ Police Academy
Provincetown is offering a six-week citizens’ police academy on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. from Sept. 24 to Oct. 29.
The academy offers a “behind the scenes look at modern policing in your community” and includes units on patrol operations, special operations, criminal investigations, crime scene processing, the use of force, and de-escalation, according to a police dept. flyer posted online.
Participants must be at least 18 years old, must live or work in Provincetown, and must pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check. The academy is free, and applications are due at the police station by Wednesday, Sept. 17.
Route 6 Redesign
Town Manager Alex Morse told the select board on Sept. 8 that the state Dept. of Transportation, or MassDOT, was aiming to secure approval of a road diet on Route 6 in North Truro without holding a public hearing, and that town staff and the Cape Cod Commission had significant issues with the agency’s plans.
Provincetown has been pursuing plans for a pair of bike lanes on the south side of Route 6, but MassDOT appears to be pursuing one bike lane on each side of the highway, Community Development Director Tim Famulare told the board. Provincetown owns its section of Route 6, but the agency controls the section in Truro and does not believe it needs to coordinate its plans for the roadway, said DPW Director Jim Vincent.
“Would the town’s new pedestrian and bike path reach the town line and then just dump into a lane of highway?” asked select board member Austin Miller.
It’s hard to tell what the DOT’s plans are for the town line, but staff plans to find out soon, Vincent said. —Paul Benson
