No Winter Air Service
At the July 28 select board meeting, airport commission chair Brian Orter said that the town’s application for federal money to restore winter air service between Provincetown and Boston is almost complete — but that even if the town wins a grant, the money would not arrive in time to support this year’s winter service.
The town had been speaking with several small airlines, but one of them, Fly the Whale, is “out of the picture for now,” Orter said. The town is still talking to Boutique Air and is also discussing with Cape Air whether a “partnership model” could work.
“The obstacle to any other airline operating out of Provincetown is that Cape Air has a gate inside TSA at Logan,” said Orter, while most other small aircraft would have to land at the private terminal that is outside the TSA’s “sterile environment.” That means passengers on those planes would need to gather their bags, take a bus to the main terminal, and go through security again to catch a connecting flight.
“The reason Cape Air likes partnering is they could bring their assets down to the Caribbean, where they normally do, and someone else can pick up passengers here” and use the Cape Air gate at Terminal C in Boston, Orter said.
“Just like you can fly Cape Air on a Delta ticket,” Orter said, passengers might be able to book year-round through Cape Air but actually be flown by a smaller carrier in the winter.
Even that arrangement would be contingent on federal support, however, with the money helping guarantee a minimum amount of revenue for the winter airline. —Paul Benson
