Self-Defense Training
On Monday, Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. and again on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at noon, the Provincetown Police Dept. is offering free personal safety and self-defense courses in the town hall auditorium.
“While Provincetown is a welcoming and inclusive community,” says the town’s announcement of the courses, “no town is entirely immune to moments of danger or the unexpected. Whether it’s walking home at night, traveling alone, encountering aggressive behavior, or facing a potentially threatening situation, being prepared can make all the difference.”
The courses are led by Chuck DiChiara, a Waltham police officer who also serves as an expert on defensive tactics and the use of force for the state’s Municipal Police Training Committee.
The classes focus on situational awareness, de-escalation, and “simple, effective self-defense techniques that don’t require strength or martial arts experience,” according to the town’s announcement. The classes last two hours and include “practical demonstrations of self-defense tactics.”
The classes are free, and no registration is required. The town’s notice says that “attendees are encouraged to arrive early to ensure a seat.” —Paul Benson
