An ‘Egregious’ Complaint
At the July 22 select board meeting, member Nancy Medoff said that a complaint by voters Tim Hickey and Dennis O’Brien against Bob Higgins-Steele was “dense with speculation, innuendo, and political theater” and constituted an “egregious misuse of the town’s time, resources, and processes.”
The two men accused Higgins-Steele, the co-chair of the ad hoc building committee, of violating Policy 66, the town’s communications policy, by “leaking” emails to the Provincetown Independent. Their complaint suggested barring Higgins-Steele, who is also chair of the town’s energy committee, from serving on town boards.
The select board had reappointed Higgins-Steele to the ad hoc building committee on June 24 despite the complaint by O’Brien and Hickey.
On July 22, select board chair Susan Areson, who had voted against that appointment, defended Higgins-Steele, saying he “has First Amendment rights and he can go to the press.”
Higgins-Steele told the select board he didn’t violate town policy, adding that Hickey and O’Brien were aiming “to get me off both committees because they don’t agree with my positions.”
“I believe that no violation occurred,” Medoff said, adding that “the actions in question may have reflected a minor lapse in judgment.”
