An Accessible Bridge?
The new Chequessett Neck Road bridge — a key component of the Herring River Restoration Project — is set to be completed by mid-2026 and is supposed to include viewing platforms with stairways, a pedestrian footpath, and an ADA-compliant access path from the Duck Harbor Road parking lot to the bridge.
At its July 29 meeting, the town’s commission on disabilities discussed the project and the members decided they wanted more information about whether the bridge’s accessibility features are being installed.
“I know that there’s a footpath going across the bridge,” said commission member Bob Dupuis. “I know there’s some sort of access from the bridge down to the water, which would have to be stairs, and I don’t know if there’s a ramp.” A cursory inspection of the construction site showed that some staircases and handrails don’t appear to be accessible, Dupuis said.
Commission members said they want to meet with DPW Director Jay Norton to review the designs for the bridge. “It’s not our job to ensure compliance,” said Dupuis, but the commission can say whether accessibility elements that were promised “are being installed or not.” —Tyler Jager
