Books in the Park
At the June 23 select board meeting, Michelle Lohr spoke in public comments about the cancellation of this year’s outdoor book readings at East End Books Ptown.
“East End bookstore owner Jeff Peters has been bringing authors and readers together for backyard readings in what is now our new, spiffy Cannery Wharf Park,” which is directly behind his bookstore, Lohr told the board. Those “very benign book readings are now on hold,” Lohr said, because the recreation dept. decided it needed to study what uses of the new park should be allowed.
Select board members Erik Borg and Leslie Sandberg said they had both been to book readings there before and were dismayed to hear there was a problem.
“This wasn’t specific to the bookstore, but the recreation commission voted that for the first summer in the new park, there wouldn’t be any private events in the public space,” Town Manager Alex Morse said. “So, no business, no applicant, no member of the public can get a permit to occupy a portion of it.”
“I get that it’s a public space, but having people read outside is lovely, and I know I’m grateful for it,” said Sandberg. “We don’t want someone to put 100 chairs on the lawn — but we can find a balance.”
The other select board members agreed and asked Morse to see if Recreation Director Brandon Motta could work something out with Peters for this summer.
“We can follow up with Jeff,” Morse said, adding, “I just want to clarify — there was nothing specific to the bookstore that required further study. There’s no study happening.” —Paul Benson
