Climate Leader
The town of Truro announced on June 13 that the state Dept. of Energy Resources had declared it to be one of 19 “climate leader communities” in the state, and the only one in southeast Massachusetts.
In addition to being a state-certified “Green Community” since 2011, the town met five additional criteria to become a climate leader, including having a clean energy and climate committee, a policy to eliminate fossil fuel use by 2050, a decarbonization plan, a zero-emissions policy for new town vehicles, and adopting the state’s specialized stretch energy code.
The climate leader certification makes the town eligible for much larger state grants, including a “decarbonization accelerator grant” of up to $1 million for municipal solar projects.
Town meeting voters approved a $5-million debt exclusion measure in May to fund large-scale solar projects at town properties.
The certification is largely due to “two great committees we have in Truro: the energy committee and its co-chairs Bob Higgins-Steele and Brian Boyle and the climate action committee and its chair Lili Flanders,” the town wrote in its announcement. “Their tireless years of work and enthusiasm have led to this exciting recognition.” —Dorothea Samaha
