Juneteenth Events
On Thursday, June 19 from 2 to 5 p.m., revelers will again celebrate Juneteenth — the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned that slavery had been abolished in the United States — on the lawn of the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House on Commercial Street.
Inspiring speeches about the struggle for civil rights and social equality will be followed by a multi-course cookout on the lawn. The food is free, and happiness is encouraged.
An art show at the Commons called “Power, Joy, and Resilience” organized by Boston artist Izzy Berdan opened on June 13 but is organized around Juneteenth. The doors at the Commons will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, and a reception is scheduled for Friday, June 20.
Finally, a Juneteenth cabaret is scheduled at the Gifford House on Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22. James Jackson Jr. is performing at 7:30 p.m. both nights, but audience members are encouraged to gather early for cocktails at 6:30.
