Conversation Starters
Vision for Route 6A
On Monday, June 16 at 5 p.m., the Cape Cod Commission is holding a public outreach meeting at town hall to gather ideas about how Route 6A in Provincetown and Truro — that is, Bradford Street, Shore Road, and the stretch of Commercial Street that connects them — can be made safer, especially for pedestrians and cyclists.
The meeting is part of a two-year study of ways that Route 6A, including the Old King’s Highway that runs from Sagamore to Orleans, can be improved while protecting the historic qualities of the roadway.
“The roadway currently lacks safe and accessible options for walking, biking, and other forms of transportation,” the commission wrote in the meeting announcement. “All users of the roadway are invited to share their experience.”
Active Shooter Preparedness
On Tuesday, June 17 at 5:30 p.m., the town will host its second annual active shooter prevention and preparedness training. Newly sworn-in Police Chief Greg Hennick will lead this year’s event with assistance from agents in the FBI’s Boston and Lakeville offices.
“The training is not in response to any specific threat toward Provincetown,” says the town’s announcement, but is a “resource for our community to enhance safety and preparedness, particularly for our LGBTQIA+ residents and visitors.”
The training is “rooted in the ‘run, hide, fight’ methodology, a proven structure for responding to active shooter events” that has largely supplanted earlier advice to “shelter in place” when a gunman enters a building.
Local Health Fair
The next day, Wednesday, June 18, the town will host a local health fair in town hall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Numerous human services organizations will be present, and a free lunch is being catered by the East End Market.
Among the free resources available are sexually transmitted infection screening, blood glucose and bone density tests, and hepatitis A vaccines. People interested in vaccines are encouraged to register on the town’s website by Friday, June 13 so that there will be enough supply on hand for people who might not register. —Paul Benson
