Preparing for Wildfires
At 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17 at the Truro library, Fire Chief Tim Collins and two state firefighters — forest fire warden Joshua Nigro and forest fire patrolman Brian Everett — will discuss wildland fire preparedness with interested homeowners and residents.
The event is a response to public concerns: “After the massive wildfires in California, people got nervous,” Collins told the Independent.
Some people think wildfire is not a risk here, “which is not the case,” Collins said. The trio of fire professionals aim to raise awareness of the risks and the many steps that homeowners can take to mitigate them.
“The time to prepare for a wildfire is not when one is knocking on your back door,” Collins said.
Instead, you can have fire professionals assess your back yard for fire risks now: Collins and staff from the state Dept. of Conservation and Recreation are also offering free site visits to homes.
“We’re not telling homeowners, ‘You have to do this, you have to do that,’ ” Collins said. “If you want to do nothing, that’s your choice.” —Dorothea Samaha
