Herding Elephants
At the May 27 select board meeting, vice chair Sue Girard-Irwin recapped a May 20 work session with the ad hoc building committee, which is tasked with shepherding a new Dept. of Public Works facility into being.
“The work session was an opportunity to talk about the elephant in the room,” she said. “The elephant is still in the room.”
Nancy Medoff asked her to elaborate. “There are two camps, and they are diametrically opposed to each other,” Girard-Irwin said.
“There was one factor that all five members identified as having a high negative impact on the committee’s ability to work, and that’s ex parte communications, the back channeling and separate side meetings that take place,” Girard-Irwin told the board. “Most significantly, they acknowledge that trust and communication within the group has broken down in some really important ways.”
She asked the board to consider whether the ad hoc building committee’s work should continue after June 30, when the appointments of its current members expire. Medoff suggested the board consult with DPW Director Jarrod Cabral, and chair Sue Areson agreed. —Aden Choate
