Changes at the Marina
After an eventful shoulder season at the Wellfleet marina — including a fire on the L-pier in April and a $600,000 town meeting vote for long-deferred repairs in May — Harbormaster Mike Cavanaugh announced on May 15 that the marina was open to summer users. New floats and finger slips in the F section, on the parking lot’s north side, are now open for boaters, and on May 27, the marina advisory committee held a lottery for waitlists in the new G section near the south bulkhead.
The Wellfleet Cultural District has also unveiled six educational signs along a walking loop that mark the marina’s Indigenous roots, its 19th-century church bells and railroad connections, and an old waterfront gathering place, the Spit and Chatter Club.
The marina advisory committee also debated a restructuring on May 27, with member Kevin Coakley proposing to rotate the board’s leadership roles throughout the year. “I’d like to see every person on the committee take a position at least at one time during the year,” he said, adding that the committee should also have two chairs.
Committee members were unsure whether those changes were permissible under town bylaws and instead re-elected Joe Aberdale as chair. Doug Straus is the committee’s new vice chair.
Shellfish constable Nancy Civetta said the pier’s new ice machine is expected to be operational by mid-July. Select board chair John Wolf said his board would discuss fees for ice on June 17. —Tyler Jager
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article, published in print on May 29, incorrectly reported that the new signs at the marina were the work of the cultural council rather than the cultural district.
