Town Election Results
The town clerk reports that 432 people voted in the annual election on May 5. All offices were uncontested, and only two non-incumbents were on the ballot: Brian Falvey won a seat on the cemetery commission and Josh Yeston was elected to the select board.
No one ran for a five-year spot on the housing authority, which remains vacant.
All eight ballot questions passed. A charter amendment establishes a spring and fall session of the annual town meeting, and voters approved a capital exemption of $600,000 to fund marina repairs. A measure to designate the select board as sewer commissioners was the closest vote, with 278 in favor and 127 against.
Incumbent select board member Barbara Carboni received 338 votes, and Yeston received 319.
“I wish more people wanted to serve on the select board,” Carboni said. “It’s better when voters have a choice.”
Fire Investigation
The state fire marshal’s final report on the April 9 pier fire concluded that “the cause of this fire is being ruled undetermined.”
First responders could not determine the fire’s origin because both the pier and an adjoining boat, the 44-foot F/V Lady Irene, were aflame when they arrived. The April 28 report says that “there were no fire protection systems inside the vessel” and that no useful security footage exists of the event. Hypotheses including an “electrical event inside the vessel” or an “electrical failure in the electrical box on the pier” could not be ruled out, State Police Investigator Daniel Myers wrote.
There is also no evidence of criminal activity, Myers wrote. He asked that the case be closed. —Tyler Jager
