Conversation Starters
Motta Field Groundbreaking
A groundbreaking ceremony will take place at Motta Field at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 16, followed immediately by a grand opening ceremony at Cannery Wharf Park. Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll is expected to attend, along with state Sen. Julian Cyr and others.
The same contractor who built Cannery Wharf Park, the Lawrence-Lynch Corp. of Falmouth, has won the $7.6-million contract to rebuild Motta Field. The select board signed the contract on April 28; it says the company has 412 days to complete the project.
After May 16, Cannery Wharf Park will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. until dusk, and the freestanding public bathroom, or “Portland Loo,” will be open for the same hours, Town Manager Alex Morse told the board. The town is also planning to have three senior tax program volunteers work shifts as “park ambassadors” this summer to help tourists with directions and keep town staff abreast of any maintenance needs.
Voting Hours
There are three days remaining to vote in the annual town election: Thursday, May 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and Election Day itself, Tuesday, May 13, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
There are no contested races on the ballot, but there is a $1.4-million operating override for the fire and police depts. and an advisory vote on the decommissioning of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. —Paul Benson
