A Couple of Good Freds
Before any disagreements took the spotlight at last weekend’s annual town meeting, a moment of sweetness prevailed. Select board chair Sue Areson presented Fred Gaechter with the Fred Todd Community Service Award.
“This award honors leadership, social responsibility, mentorship, and the ability to make positive change in a community,” Areson said. It was created in memory of Fred Todd, a longtime Truro resident and activist who died in April 2022.
“Those of us who were fortunate enough to serve with Fred Todd in his many capacities really recognize how Fred Gaechter embodies all of the traits that make him so deserving of this award,” Areson added.
Gaechter is chair of the Truro Conservation Trust and helped coordinate the effort to purchase the Pond Village Community Chapel for $1.54 million last year, ensuring that Pastor David Brown’s mostly Jamaican congregation could continue to worship there.
Gaechter has served on Truro’s select board, board of assessors, finance committee, charter review committee, climate action committee, conservation commission, and Walsh Property Community Planning Committee. He has also served on the Barnstable County charter review committee and as board member and president of Outer Cape Health Services.
Areson saluted Gaechter’s trustworthiness and his ability to bring people together to work on hard problems.
“This award honors all the Truro people who serve on committees, on boards, on commissions, and nonprofit organizations,” Gaechter said. “They are the ones that make it possible for all of us to live in this beautiful place.” —Aden Choate
