Affordable in Perpetuity
The Maurice’s Campground Planning Committee voted on April 9 to recommend to the select board that all year-round housing developed at Maurice’s should be restricted to the income bracket it initially was intended to serve in perpetuity.
Affordability is calculated relative to area median income in Barnstable County, which changes as incomes earned change. The vote was in part a response to concerns raised at the community meeting on April 2 that a for-profit developer might want affordability restrictions that eventually expire.
Member Tim Sayre abstained from the vote, saying he was worried that affordability restrictions might conflict with the town’s ability to fund certain units for municipal staff, which is newly allowed under the state’s seasonal communities designation. “I think we should own a few of the places over there, as a town,” Sayre said. —Tyler Jager
