Coastal Resilience Investments
Since last summer, the town has been developing its coastal resiliency plan, and another community engagement event with the planning consultants and town staff is set for Thursday, April 17 at town hall, although the time has not yet been announced.
The plan has focused on developing a menu of coastal flooding responses that can be adopted by individual homeowners, by groups of neighbors in low-lying areas of town such as Howland Street, and by town departments including the Dept. of Public Works.
Twice this winter, the DPW placed new deployable flood barriers near the Ice House Condominiums at Commercial and Howland, although there were no significant floodwaters to divert during either of those storms.
The capital improvement plan that voters endorsed at town meeting on April 7 includes new spending on flood control: $75,000 for a feasibility study for an East End wave attenuator and $100,000 for a feasibility study and preliminary design for an elevated bulkhead at the West End parking lot.
Another $275,000 was allocated to the DPW to purchase more flood barriers, make improvements to stormwater outfall pipes, and fund other floodproofing measures for town hall. — Paul Benson
