Safety Net for Special Ed
A school committee request for a special education stabilization fund will not appear on the town meeting warrant after all.
Town Manager Jacqui Beebe told the Independent that although the school committee had brought up the idea of a fund to cover unexpected costs related to accommodations for Eastham students with special needs, their conversations had not resulted in a warrant article.
That was partly because the deadline for new articles had already passed by the time the idea had been vetted. But that’s not the only reason the idea didn’t make the warrant. Finance Director Rich Bienvenue said that money from the town’s existing stabilization fund could be used in the case of unexpected special education costs. Of a special fund, he said, “I don’t know that we need another under the direct control of the school committee when we already have one under the control of the select board.” —Parker Mumford
