You’ve Got Mail
Full-time Eastham residents will be getting residential tax exemption (RTE) application forms in the mail soon, according to Principal Assessor Colleen Mercurio, even though the policy hasn’t officially been enacted by the select board yet.
That’s because the RTE requires residents to opt in and the assessing dept. to confirm that each applicant’s primary residence is here.
“If we have any reason to suspect that you might be eligible, we’re mailing you an application,” Mercurio told the select board on March 24. She also said that this year’s tax classification hearing will be held “as late as possible” in order to get the maximum number of applications in hand.
“The more people who sign up, the better off we are for knowing what’s going on,” said board member Jerry Cerasale. “The sooner you apply, the better you help Eastham if we do have an RTE in place.”
During a “pre-qualification period” from April 1 to Sept. 1, the assessing dept. will review submissions. There will be drop-in sessions at town hall from 10 a.m. to noon every Thursday to help residents fill out the application as well as home visits for homebound taxpayers, Mercurio said.
Select board members said they would also hold office hours at the library to help people with their applications. —Parker Mumford
