Collision Course
The dept. of public works is “looking into ways to limit traffic on the pier and ways to minimize the impacts on Lopes Square,” according to a March 18 memo from Town Manager Alex Morse to the select board.
“Many pier users would like to not allow any vehicles on the pier to drop off or pick up ferry passengers,” the memo says.
Four select board members lodged objections to that idea at their March 24 meeting, although the issue was complicated by the fact that the Army Corps of Engineers has its own issues with private vehicle traffic on the pier.
“Removing vehicles for pickup and drop-off at ferries struck me as potentially a really bad idea,” said board member Erik Borg. “These ‘many pier users’ — is that the fishing community?”
Board member Leslie Sandberg described the town’s problem with the Army Corps — but Assistant Town Manager Dan Riviello said that both the MacMillan Pier Commission and the harbor committee are also interested in stopping private vehicle traffic to the ferry terminal.
“This was something that pier users felt very strongly about,” Riviello said, and the two committees are now working on a joint letter to the select board and a joint meeting request.
“I couldn’t consider supporting that without an actual realistic planned alternative,” said select board member Austin Miller. Drivers would idle their cars in the town’s central bus stop and make congestion in the area even worse if they couldn’t drive onto the pier, he said. —Paul Benson
