The News From 25 S. Highland
Five months after Cape Cod Builders demolished one of the two cottages the company was supposed to restore for town workforce housing, the project is still on pause.
At the March 11 select board meeting, Assistant Town Manager Kelly Clark said the contractor “went outside the scope” of its contract in October by demolishing the Walsh cottage without consulting the town or its construction consultant, Weston & Sampson.
In November, the select board directed staff to issue a notice of violation and work with MassDevelopment to salvage the $900,000 grant intended for the renovation effort.
“This has required staff to redo funding plans multiple times” and bring some of the proposed work in-house, said Clark. The town submitted a budget amendment in December to secure the full grant amount, of which $200,000 remains unspent.
Clark said two cottages could be brought online with the available funds at 25 South Highland, but expanding the Dennis cottage as originally planned would not be possible.
“That’s where we stand,” Clark said. “This work is really on pause until we can pay for it.” —Aden Choate
