‘State of Town’ at Community Forum
The select board rolled up its sleeves on March 4 to work on the town meeting warrant, still in draft form. They did not take public comments during presentations on the operating budget, projected at $32,451,871 for fiscal 2026, or the capital budget, projected at $2,267,750, exempting transfers from free cash and other reserved funds.
Town Administrator Tom Guerino told the board that free cash certification was still pending at the Mass. Dept. of Revenue, even though Town Accountant Suzanne Moquin had been “dogged” in pursuing it.
Article 21 looks to allocate $300,000 in Community Preservation Act funds to support infrastructure work for the building of eight affordable houses at 120 Paine Hollow Road. That development was approved by town regulatory boards in 2007, but litigation has hindered its progress since.
“Five of the homes will be reserved for local preference for those who currently live or work in Wellfleet, have kids in Wellfleet Elementary School,” the draft warrant says. “Three acres on this property will be reserved for Open Space.”
Article 23 seeks $250,000 in CPA funds to hire a full-time housing coordinator for the town — a hire that passed at town meeting in 2023 but required an override and then failed at the ballot by 17 votes.
Guerino will discuss the year in review and the budget at a “state of the town” address organized by the Wellfleet Community Forum on Thursday, March 6 at 7 p.m. at the Adult Community Center. —Tyler Jager
