DPW at Town Hall
At its Feb. 25 meeting, the select board voted 3 to 1, with Stephanie Rein abstaining, to select the current site of the DPW building at Town Hall Hill as the location for a rebuilt DPW facility. The vote to hire the firm Weston and Sampson to design the building was 4 to 1.
Vice chair Bob Weinstein, who argued for selecting a site the board had originally preferred at 340 Route 6, was the sole dissenting vote in both decisions.
“This is a difficult position to be in, but it’s self-inflicted,” he said, adding that the board had surrendered its proper authority over town-owned land by deferring to last year’s town meeting vote.
Areson said she agreed with Weinstein’s reasoning but felt she could not disregard the clear will of the voters. “I do not feel like I am relinquishing my responsibility,” said Areson. “I am listening to the vote and what we have in front of us.”
After the site selection vote, the board heard an environmental monitoring update from site planner Bryan Massa of HRP Associates. He estimated that environmental remediation costs at Town Hall Hill would range from $5 million to $6.3 million.
DPW Director Jarrod Cabral described those estimates as a “worst case scenario,” and Massa agreed they were on the high end, but he said they included contingencies for all potential needs at the site. —Aden Choate
