Conversation Starters
Catching Shipwrecks
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is holding a series of meetings with fishermen on an unusual subject: ways to avoid damaging interactions between fishing gear and “submerged cultural heritage” — that is, shipwrecks — off the coast of Massachusetts.
The project is a collaboration with the marine debris program at the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown and is funded by a grant from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
There will be six meetings around the state, with one set to be held in Provincetown on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. at the Center for Coastal Studies headquarters at 5 Holway Ave.
The researchers are seeking input from commercial fishermen on “ghost gear” removal techniques, including the use of remote operated vehicles, and solutions to prevent gear from getting caught on shipwrecks in the first place.
Police Chief Public Forum
The town will host an online-only public forum on Feb. 6 about its plans to find and hire a new police chief.
The forum will be at 3 p.m. and will include members of a recently appointed six-person search committee as well as town staff and representatives from Public Safety Consultants LLC, which is assisting with outreach to potential candidates.
The town’s search process seeks to replace Chief Jim Golden after his retirement, which is set for Feb. 28, 2025. —Paul Benson
