Market-Rate Rental Project
Developers M. Tatiana Eck and Christine Barker will update the select board on Dec. 9 on their market-rate rental development that is slated to replace the town’s old police station at 26 Shank Painter Road.
The state’s Affordable Homes Act, which became law in August, includes several provisions that increase state financing for housing that serves people who earn between 80 and 120 percent of area median income (AMI) — a demographic that receives almost no federal housing funds but that has been crowded out of many hot real estate markets, including the Outer Cape.
The project at 26 Shank Painter, which Eck and Barker are calling The Bellwether, was supposed to provide 40 rental apartments for people earning between 80 and 200 percent of AMI, although only eight of those apartments would be deed restricted to certain income levels.
When the pair last presented to the select board in March, their project was forecast to cost $17 million total, including a $4 million contribution from the town. —Paul Benson
