Sewer Connection Grants
Provincetown dedicated $200,000 of its funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to helping low-income homeowners pay to connect to the town’s expanding sewer system, but only about half that money has been used, according to a memo from Assistant Housing Director Mackenzie Perry to the select board. Twelve homeowners have received money from the town’s program.
The ARPA funds must be used by March 1, 2025, so the town is proposing to increase the income limit for the sewer connection grants to 120 percent of area median income — $103,068 for a household of one, or $121,620 for a household of two. The town is also planning to allow homeowners who rent their properties at affordable rates to qualify for funding.
The town’s existing Affordable Tax Exemption program lowers homeowners’ property taxes if they rent to low-income tenants at qualifying affordable rates. Perry wrote that 6 to 10 affordable rentals that are not currently connected to the sewer could be eligible for the expanded grant program. Interested homeowners must apply by Jan. 1.
Winter Wednesdays
Instructor applications are open for next year’s Winter Wednesdays series of free courses, which can now be taught in any of the four Outer Cape towns or online and do not have to be on a Wednesday.
The seven-week courses include a variety of offerings in arts and crafts, cooking, sports, and wellness. They aim to help fight isolation and improve mental well-being in the Outer Cape’s long winters.
Classes and supplies are free and instructors receive a $50 stipend for each of the seven weeks from Jan. 20 to March 7. Instructor applications can be found at winterwednesdays.org and are due on Dec. 6. —Paul Benson
