New Harbor Staff
A hiring committee made up of Town Administrator Tom Guerino, marina advisory committee chair Joe Aberdale, and interim Harbormaster Stuart Smith has decided on the town’s next permanent harbormaster: Michael Cavanaugh.
Cavanaugh has 23 years in “extensive professional management experience,” Smith told the select board on Nov. 12, and has skills in “training, supervision, and leadership of 30 staff people, dealing with the public, conflict resolution, and fiscal management.” Most of that was in banking, according to Cavanaugh’s résumé, and he has held leadership positions at Charles Schwab and TD Bank. Last summer, however, Cavanaugh served as a community service officer with the Wellfleet Police Dept.
The committee was looking for someone “well qualified in the important and various aspects of management” and with a “willingness to effectively work with the marina advisory committee,” Aberdale said.
“So many of these management procedures are nonexistent, and there is a need to build a new operation from the ground up,” Aberdale added.
Cavanaugh has appointed David Dalby as his assistant harbormaster. Dalby worked for the harbormaster’s office for several summers and moved back to Wellfleet after graduating from college this past spring.
According to Smith, both Cavanaugh and Dalby live in Wellfleet. —Sam Pollak
