Septic Regulation Planning
The health dept. and the board of health are still working on revisions to the town’s draft septic system regulations, said Health Agent Heith Martinez, after working through 30 written comments and hearing dozens of concerns at public hearings.
The department’s goal is to have final revisions done in time for the board of health’s Nov. 13 meeting and to vote to adopt the regulations on Nov. 18. A draft revision will be out this week, Martinez said.
The regulations are part of the town’s Targeted Watershed Management Plan aimed at reducing nitrogen pollution in the harbor and bringing the town into compliance with state law, which is mandating action for coastal towns located in nitrogen sensitive areas.
At the board of health’s Sept. 25 meeting, many speakers objected to the idea that a change in trust ownership would require a homeowner to upgrade a septic system to the best available nitrogen-reducing technology.
“We have heard you, we have paid attention to your comments, and we want to get this right,” Martinez said at the Oct. 23 board of health meeting. —Sam Pollak
