After nearly six years of fundraising, planning, and construction, a new education center at Wild Care was shown off to visitors for the first time at a Halloween bash.
Before the party began, visitors were offered a chance to see an eastern screech owl in the center’s newly expanded area. But Wild Care Executive Director Stephanie Ellis said the new building won’t normally be open to the public. It will serve as the center’s education and cleaning center, where visitors will drop off sick or injured animals. A waiting room is outfitted with educational materials so that visitors can learn more about the animals while volunteers make their diagnoses.
Ellis says the expansion will help the operation most during the summer, when it receives the majority of its animals. The 792-square-foot addition cost over $750,000, Ellis said, and was paid for by donations to the nonprofit organization. —Parker Mumford
