Paid Parking for Spooky Bear
The select board approved a request from the parking dept. to extend paid parking season at town lots and numbered spaces from its typical seasonal end on Nov. 1 until 10 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3.
“In reviewing data from previous years, parking revenue during Halloween weekend has been significant, which is why we believe the Nov. 1 date was historically meant to include Halloween and Spooky Bear,” Town Manager Alex Morse told the select board. Because Halloween is on a Thursday this year and the “Spooky Bear” festivities follow it, they will fall on Nov. 1 through 3.
Morse said that extending paid parking would likely raise just over $30,000, based on receipts from prior events.
Flood Barriers
The town has purchased a sandbag-filling machine that is expected to be delivered in a couple of weeks, along with temporary barriers that the town will be using in a pilot project over the next couple of months, according to a memo from Morse to the select board.
These use the weight of water — frequently floodwaters themselves but sometimes pumped water from hoses or hydrants — to anchor barriers two to five feet high that can divert coastal floodwaters from homes and buildings.
The town invited several companies to demonstrate their products at a coastal resilience event at town hall in October.
At least one Provincetown homeowner has already purchased a barrier system, and the town is now experimenting with them as well. —Paul Benson
