Undelayed Demolition
Last week, a crew from Cape Cod Builders Inc., which won a construction contract with the town in June, demolished a house on the town-owned lot at 25 South Highland Road where two buildings — one from the Walsh property and one from 127 South Pamet Road — were moved in February to be renovated into workforce housing.
“They knocked down that whole house that had been brought over here to be put on the foundation,” said Naomi Rorro, who lives nearby. “They didn’t notify the neighbors.”
Cape Cod Builders apparently did not notify the town, either. “I was shocked to see what I saw there,” DPW Director Jarrod Cabral told the select board on Oct. 8. He said he visited the site on Monday morning after the town learned of the demolition from concerned residents. Weston & Sampson, the town’s consultants on the job, also were not informed about the demolition.
Cabral said he was limited in what he could publicly discuss pending legal review with land use counsel Barbara Carboni. He said he would also have to notify the state, which was to provide grant funding for the renovations through its underutilized properties program.
“This is very awkward for us,” said select board chair Susan Areson.
“This staff is in complete agreement,” said Town Manager Darrin Tangeman.
The select board agreed to convene for a special meeting next week to discuss next steps. —Aden Choate
