Capello Named Fire Chief
The select board named Deputy Chief Joseph Capello as the town’s next fire chief following the retirement of Chief Richard Pauley at the end of August. Capello has been with the department since 1992, when he joined as a first responder. He came on full-time in 1997 after receiving EMT and paramedic licenses and training as a firefighter.
“It’s almost a dream come true,” Capello told the board at its Aug. 6 meeting. He had served as deputy chief since February 2023, when he was promoted from captain.
“We couldn’t ask for a better person to step into this position,” said vice chair Michael DeVasto. Capello’s long tenure, along with being born and raised in Wellfleet, makes his “institutional knowledge” unmatched, DeVasto said.
“We are lucky to have someone who really knows the community and cares about it,” DeVasto said. “He lives here. Good luck trying to find a fire chief to move out here and not live at Maurice’s Campground.”
