Conversation Starters
‘The State of the World’
A group of leading writers and thinkers will appear at the Truro Community Center later this month in a discussion event on “the state of the world.”
The panel includes author James Carroll, a historian and winner of the 1996 National Book Award; psychiatrist and writer Robert Jay Lifton, known for studying political violence through a psychological lens; and Baroness Helena Kennedy, a human rights lawyer who has written extensively about British law as it relates to gender.
At least two of the panelists spend significant time on the Outer Cape. Lifton co-founded the Study Group of Psychohistorical Process in Wellfleet during the 1960s, which explored the connection between history and psychoanalysis. Carroll also has a home in Wellfleet.
The free event is co-sponsored by the Truro and Wellfleet libraries. It will take place at the community center (7 Standish Way) on Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 6 to 7 p.m.
Child-Care Vouchers
Applications for the town’s child-care voucher program are due by Friday, Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. for coverage during the first half of the school year (Sept. 1, 2024 to Feb. 28, 2025). The program provides up to $7,500 in tuition assistance for child care to eligible families in town. Kids up to four years of age who are children of Truro residents, town employees, or business owners/employees who work at least 20 hours a week in Truro can receive the vouchers. —Sophie Mann-Shafir
