A Failed Bid
Shellfisherman Timothy Hughes attended a July 16 select board hearing on his appointment as an alternate on the shellfish advisory board. But before the board could vote, he withdrew his application.
“I don’t even want to be on the committee,” Hughes told the board.
Hughes expressed concern over the state of the wild fishery, which he described as “pretty disarrayed,” and stated that his “livelihood is threatened.”
Board members discussed the tenor of shellfish advisory board meetings. “One of my overriding concerns is the climate of hostility, particularly toward the shellfish warden,” chair John Wolf said. “Are you prepared to work with her on problems of this sort?”
Vice chair Michael DeVasto, a shellfisherman, said he usually recuses himself from shellfish advisory board appointments but didn’t this time because he worried Hughes would bring more hostility to the board. “There have been times when members of the shellfish advisory board have used the board as a bully pulpit to make attacks against the shellfish constable,” DeVasto said. “My concern is that I have seen you lose your temper.”
“I have had my livelihood threatened by two town employees,” Hughes responded. “I would like to be treated like a human being.”
Wolf interjected: “This goes exactly to what I said.”
“Then I won’t be on the committee,” Hughes said before leaving the meeting. —Sam Pollak
