Route 6 ‘Road Diet’ Update
James Fitzgerald, an engineer at Environmental Partners Group, showed the latest plans for a Route 6 redesign to the select board on July 8. The board agreed that it liked the same plan the fire and police depts. liked.
It’s a version that will cost $17.4 million, a little more than the $16.7-million plan that would have a raised median island splitting the northbound and southbound traffic. The one the board preferred will raise the median in some places and have a mountable median in others.
Several board members mentioned that the state would likely be paying for the majority of the project and that they would also want to explore federal funding.
The idea is for the roadway to accommodate “all modes of transportation,” Fitzgerald said. The proposal reduces the number of lanes from four to two and creates a protected bike lane and sidewalk.
From 2015 to 2019, there were 111 reported crashes on Route 6 in Eastham, according to Fitzgerald’s presentation.
Fitzgerald said next steps are to meet with the Cape Cod Commission and Mass. Dept. of Transportation to get their suggestions.
Images of the proposals will eventually be uploaded to a project website. For now, renderings can be seen on the town’s recorded video of the select board meeting. —Jack Styler
