Fiber Optic Network Grant
Truro has received a $250,000 grant from the state to expand its municipal fiber optic network.
The grant will add Truro Central School, Head of the Meadow Beach, Corn Hill Beach, the harbormaster’s office, the transfer station, Snow’s Field, and the beach office to the existing network. Until now, the network has comprised town hall, the DPW building, public safety facility, community center, and library.
The new fiber-optic cables will be about 15 miles long, according to the town’s June 21 press release. Weaving in the seven soon-to-be-connected sites will allow computers at those sites to use shared servers and applications.
The upgrade will bring fiber closer to residential areas, according to David Wennerberg, Truro’s director of information technologies. “Truro still has a long way to go in building out a town-wide fiber network,” he said, “but this grant gives us a great start and builds momentum.”
Longnook Is Closed Again
The town announced on June 25 that it had temporarily sealed off access to Longnook Beach again “while the pathway and adjacent dunes are evaluated for safety.”
The beach was previously closed for two months this spring because of extensive coastal erosion. —Sophie Mann-Shafir
