Conversation Starters
Local Health Fair
Provincetown will host a local health fair open to all residents and employees of the four Outer Cape towns on June 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at town hall. The event is organized by the Provincetown Health Dept. and the nonprofit Outer Cape Community Solutions.
Offerings include free blood pressure, cholesterol, and bone density screenings, nutrition guidance, and CPR training. There will also be instruction on the use of Narcan to reverse opioid overdoses and free “insect shield” socks that are treated with permethrin to repel ticks.
Provincetown’s housing dept. will offer information on rental assistance and the Lease to Locals program as well as applications for the Harbor Hill apartment complex. There will be free lunch and snacks catered by East End Market.
Afterward there will be free bladder cancer screenings for Provincetown’s volunteer firefighters, who are at higher risk due to their exposure to certain pollutants.
Elder Abuse Prevention
A week later, on Thursday, June 13 at 11 a.m., Elder Services of the Cape and Islands will be holding a “lunch and learn” at the Veterans Memorial Community Center to discuss the risk factors and signs of elder abuse and discuss “effective community-based approaches to prevention.” The event is in honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.
All residents of the Outer Cape are invited to attend and enjoy a free lunch. To sign up, call the Council on Aging at 508-487-7080. —Paul Benson
