Ad Hoc DPW Planning
The ad hoc building committee is looking at preliminary site plans for a revamped DPW facility without knowing if the funding to move forward is secured. That will be determined at the special election on June 27.
The committee’s design plans are sited at the current facility’s location on Town Hall Hill since the 340 Route 6 site is no longer an option.
DPW Director Jarrod Cabral presented some “very preliminary” plans at the committee’s May 23 meeting. It meets again on June 6.
Engineers, Cabral said, “are working on a couple more that would actually incorporate a little bit of town hall,” he said.
The committee now has permission to investigate construction at any site except 340 Route 6. One 1,500-square-foot area for “custodial storage” that had been “value-engineered out” now needs to be added back in.
“When we cut back this space, the intent was that custodial storage was going to move up to the former DPW,” said Michael Richard of Weston & Sampson. “Now that we’re looking back up at the Town Hall Hill site, that square footage needs to be included.”
That leaves the total facility area at 21,670 square feet.
Committee member Anthony Garrett was wary of moving forward without funding. “It’s better to know what we’re dealing with before we start spinning wheels and spending money,” he said. “Unfortunately, our hands are tied until that election in June,” which Tangeman confirmed. —Sophie Mann-Shafir
