School Committee Candidate
Amy Costa is hoping to be elected to the school committee as a write-in candidate. Only one candidate, incumbent Vida Richter, is running in the May 29 election for three open seats on the committee.
“I have three kids who are all going to be going through this school system,” said Costa. “I’ve just built my house in Truro, so I’m not going anywhere.” She grew up in Coventry, Conn. and has lived in Truro for 15 years.
The eldest of Costa’s three children just finished his first year of preschool. She also has a two-and-a-half-year-old and a three-month-old.
Costa was part of the Business and Professional Women group from 2017 to 2019, the Community Development Partnership board from 2018 to 2020, and the Wellfleet Farmers Market from 2019 to 2022.
Costa says love of Truro is driving her campaign. She’s gotten to know other families through the school and wants to nurture that year-round community.
“The future of our school matters to me,” Costa said. “I’m invested.”
A Question on Libraries
Voters at the town election on May 29 will see just one question on the ballot: a charter amendment regarding the hiring of the library director.
If it passes, the amendment will require that the town manager consult the library trustees when hiring a new library director. Currently, the trustees don’t need to be consulted. The ballot question follows Article 42 at 2023 annual town meeting, which passed easily. Amendments to the town charter need approval at town meeting and at the ballot box. —Sophie Mann-Shafir
