Waiting at the Chapel Door
Since February, the Truro Conservation Trust and other community members have been fundraising in hopes of purchasing the chapel at 17 Pond Road. The trust would lease it, for $1 per year, back to the congregation that has been worshipping there for seven years.
According to organizers, the effort is currently on pause — but not because of a lack of donations.
“We’ve reached the goal to make an offer,” organizer Kate Wallace Rogers confirmed on Tuesday. But, she added, “We’re in a holding pattern.” The property, which has been vacant since late March, still has not been listed for sale by its current owners, Bob and Kathy Valleau.
“They informed us that they need a couple of months to think about the whole process,” said trust chair Fred Gaechter.
In the meantime, the mostly Jamaican congregation that usually worships there is holding services at the United Methodist Church in Wellfleet. “The congregation is still intact,” Pastor David Brown told the Independent on Tuesday. “The parishioners are still coming out together.”
Typically, Brown’s congregation holds services after the Wellfleet parish does. But last Sunday, the two groups worshipped together. “The fellowship was wonderful,” Brown said.
Regarding the Truro chapel, he added, “we’re waiting it out.” —Sophie Mann-Shafir
