Chief Pauley to Retire
Fire Chief Richard Pauley, 60, announced his intention to retire at the end of August in a letter to the select board on May 2.
Pauley has served as Wellfleet’s fire chief for 11 years and has worked for more than 40 years in the fire service. “Serving this town has been a heartfelt and extraordinary experience,” Pauley wrote.
In his tenure as chief, the department’s fleet has been “completely replaced and modernized,” Pauley wrote, and full-time staffing levels have doubled. “We have developed an incredible staff of professionals that are second to none.
“As much as I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as fire chief in this wonderful community, it is time for me to spend more time with my wife and our family,” Pauley said.
Pauley announced his retirement at the May 7 select board meeting to a standing ovation from those present. “This is the first and only standing ovation I’ll get in my life,” an emotional Pauley said. —Sam Pollak
