Pesticides Warrant
The May 20 annual town meeting warrant includes a home-rule petition that aims to reduce the use of toxic pesticides on public and private property. Approval of the article would authorize the select board to petition the state legislature to allow the town to regulate the use of pesticides, which are otherwise under the purview of state and federal law.
The article, proposed by Laura Kelley, is identical to one approved by Orleans voters at their October town meeting. Eastham’s annual town meeting warrant also contains a home-rule petition seeking the power to regulate pesticides, and Harwich has a similar citizen petitioned article on its warrant, Kelley said.
According to the proposed bylaw, pesticides containing toxic chemicals are harmful to pollinators, plants, and soil microbiology, and runoff from fertilizers and pesticides poses a threat to water quality. Wellfleet’s bylaw does not prohibit businesses from selling products containing pesticides. —Sam Pollak
