Conversation Starter
Once Upon a Time
The Eastham Recycling Committee, the Climate Action Committee, and the Chamber of Commerce are hosting a forum on April 20 called “Moving Forward for Our Environment.” The event, which will be held at the Eastham Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon, will focus on how local businesses can move away from single-use plastics including straws, cutlery, and take-out containers.
The discussion will touch on public health and environmental hazards linked to single-use plastic and the pros and cons for businesses. Other towns’ responses to single-use plastics will also be discussed. Provincetown banned the sale of all noncarbonated, unflavored drinking water in single-use plastic bottles of less than one gallon in 2021.
In September 2020, Eastham voters endorsed a bylaw banning single-use water bottles and polystyrene containers. Before last year’s town meeting, the select board voted unanimously not to recommend an article banning plastic food containers and single-use utensils on the grounds that that there had not been sufficient conversation with business owners before the article was introduced.
Saturday’s event is intended to provide that venue for conversation, according to Gretchen Stiers, chair of the Eastham Recycling Committee. —Olivia Oldham
